Black Magic, Evil Eye and Jinn

Nothing harms us except by the will, permission and knowledge of Allah SWT. Nothing can ever happen to us except if Allah SWT has willed it, has written it and if Allah knows about it, and He will know about it.

Allah says, ''And from the evil of the envier when he envies.'' (Al- Falaq)

There are Ahaadith from Prophet (PBUH) which speak of the effects of the Evil eye. For example, it is narrated in al-Sahihayn that Hadhrat Aisha (RA) said: ''The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to tell me to recite Ruqya for protection against the evil eye.''

Muslim, Ahmad and Al- Tirmidhi narrated from Ibn Abbas (RA) that the Prophet (PBUH) said: ''The evil eye is real and if anything was to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye. When you are asked to take a bath (to provide a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.''

We must also protect ourselves against the devils among the evil Jinn and mankind, by having strong faith in Allah and by placing trust in Him and seeking refuge with Him and beseeching Him, reciting prayers for protection narrated by the Prophet (PBUH), recing the last 2 surahs of the Quran and Ayatul Kursi.

It is mentioned in the Ahaadith that a Jewish man cast a magic spell on the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and that the Holy Prophet was influenced by it- Allah forbid. It is is mentioned in narrations that the spell was cast on a comb and some strands of hair and thrown into a well named Zhi Arwan. The Holy Prophet later had it removed.

It is said (Allah forbid) that the Holy Prophet remained under this spell for some time (This is the rumour that was spread). ''During this period, the Prophet would feel low and disheartened and in the state of anxiousness, he would repeatedly supplicate.''
One prominent aspect in relation to this state during that period was that it had affected the Holy Prophet's memory. He used to forget certain matters, so much so that at times, he would think that he had already completed a certian task, whereas he had not in fact done so.
Some argue that these symptoms were not from the black magic. However, it is evident from many narrations that black magic was done on the Prophet (PBUH), Allah SWT knows best.

''And they followed instead what the devils had recited during the reign of Soloman. It was not Soloman who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revelaed to the two angels at Bbaylon, Harut and Marut.'' (Quran 2:102)

The Quran and Sunnah indicate that Jinns exist and that there is a purpose for their existence in this life, which is to worship Allah SWT alone.

''And I (Allah) created not the jinn and humans, except that they should worship Me (Alone).'' (Al-Dhariyat)

''And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire.'' (Al- Hjir)

Because jinns can see us humans, yet we cannot see them unless Allah SWT wills it, the Prophet (PBUH) taught us many ways to protect ourselves from their harm, such as seeking refuge with Allah from the accursed shaytaan, recitng the last two surahs of the Quran, and reciting the words taught by Allah in the Quran; Surah Al- Muminun 23:97-98.

''And some men used to seek refuge with some jinn- so they increased each other in wickedness. And those humans thought just like you (Jinn) that Allah would not resurrect anyone, for judgement.'' (Surah Al Jinn)

Allah SWT does not put a burden on anyone more than their capacity and ability. This reassures us that Allah SWT is Just and Merciful.
''Allah does not charge a soul except (with that within) its capacity. It will have (the consequence of) what (good) it has gained, and it will bear (the consequence of) what (evil) it has earned.'' (Surah Al Baqarah)
